Can Bubbles Destroy a Solid Surface? PSU Physicist Comments on Ultrasonic Phenomena

Oscar Fattalov, a post-graduate student in Physics, explores the phenomenon of bubbles causing effect on the solid surface, as a result of ultrasound affecting the liquid layer underneath. The experiments will expand the fundamental knowledge in the field of hydrodynamics, acoustics and sonochemistry. The results can be applied to improve existing technologies for mineral processing using the flotation method.

Perm Physicists Help Get Over Navigation Problems and Internet Breakdowns at Temperature Extremes

PSU scientists led by Roman Ponomarev, Assistant Professor, Department of Solid State Physics, have found a way to keep fiber optic gyroscopes using integrated optical circuits at significant temperature differences. Through the series of applied research tasks, the scientists defined the conditions which  lead to failure of integrated-optical circuits, as well as proposed an algorithm for solving the problem. The study is published in the World Journal of Applied Science.

PSU Student from Somalia Shares Impressions on Russia

On 23-24 October, Sochi (Russia) hosted the Summit and the Russia-Africa Economic Forum (ЭкономическийфорумРоссия- Африка), inviting leaders of all African states and major organizations to participate. About 6.000 people participated in the Forum, including 1.900 international guests and 1.400 representatives of Russian business. The Forum was attended by more than 40 state leaders and 120 ministers from different countries.

The Memorandum of Understanding for a new 10-year period was officially signed by Rector Dr. Igor Makarikhin on behalf of PSU, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Easton on behalf of the University of Oxford. "Thanks to cooperation between our Universities, a Twin Cities link was established between Oxford and Perm. We have enjoyed a series of successful projects with our Oxford colleagues, including the annual seminar in Modern British Literature, and the Victorian Center, established at PSU. ” said the Rector.
