Brief Description of Research Activities

The trend deals with the investigation of ways of formation and functioning dialect lexis and onomastics, as part of the Russian language, at different historical periods in etymological, historical linguistic, ethnolinguistic and cultural aspects, specifically the reflection of material and spiritual culture peculiar to the Perm Region in onomastics, of the Perm region.

 

Researchers working within the trend carry out paleographic description and analysis of the XVIIIth century manuscripts and investigate thematic groups of lexis in the written records and dialects based on the comparison with the results of the analysis of the Perm Region dialect lexicon, as well as with the written records and dialects of other Russian regions and various Slavonic languages.

 

Based on the dialect speech recordings the scholars investigate the interaction of Russian and Komi-Permyak dialects of the Perm Region both in the aspect of lexical borrowings and ethnic culture interaction.

 

One of the main objectives of the scientific activity within the trend is the development of regional dictionaries. Some of them (“Dictionary of Perm surnames”, “Dictionary of the Perm Region inhabitants’ names in the XVI-XVIII centuries”, “Dictionary of lexis of Perm written ancient records of the XVI-early XVIIIth century” by E.N. Polyakova; “Dictionary of dialect personality” by V.A. Malysheva; “Dictionary of magical lexis” by I.I. Rusinova et al.; “Dictionary of folk sayings of the Perm Region” by L.A. Gruzberg) have no analoges in this developing trend, others (“Dictionary of geographical terms in the Russian speech of the Perm Region” by E.N. Polyakova; “Dictionary of Northern Russian dialects of the Perm Region”) develop the lexicographic tradition of the national linguistic school.
