Convective and Hydrodynamic Instability. Multiphase Flows. Vibrational Fluid Dynamics

Brief Description of Research Activities
A series of works was carried out on investigation of non-Boussinesq effects in free thermal convection within generalized Boussinesq approximation that allows correct accounting for the deformations of interface.
 
A number of works was carried out to study the effect of vibration on equilibrium, stability and non-linear dynamics of multicomponent and multiphase media. A new vibrational mechanism of binary mixtures equilibrium instability was discovered which can lead to instability even in the absence of gravity. The regularities of forming structures in various suspensions and emulsions of microorganisms were formulated that pave the way to the development of vibrational phase separation technologies.
 
A certain number of works was devoted to the study of non-stationary external field effect on flows and heat and mass transfer in crystal growing. It was discovered for the directional solidification of binary alloys that normal vibrations promote morphological instability of the planar front while tangential vibrations make stabilizing effect; the greatest positive effect is achieved with the use of rotational vibrations: in this case it is possible to attain a substantial improvement of admixture distribution homogeneity in the crystal raising the threshold of morphological instability.
 
The methods for vibration impact on oil bearing layer promoting oil recovery were  developed.
 
Theoretical models of interface dynamics in porous media for application to the problem of natural hydrates melting have been also developed.
 
Research results are used in development of natural phenomena and technological process control methods. In particular, they are of paramount importance for understanding and solving the problems of global warming, pollution dissemination by air and water flows, disaster consequences mitigation and for effective control of crystal growing and phase separation processes.
