Brief Description of Research Activities

Need for solving the problems of interaction of languages and cultures is determined by great demand in new solutions in the field of multilingual humane communication which is the dominant factor of the modern communication policy. The scholars of the trend consider intercultural communication as a process that manifests all characteristics and nuances of man as a personality and reflects mechanisms of adaptation to modern social conditions.

 

Research activity within the trend is aimed at the development of the theoretical basis for investigation of processes of language interaction both in the aspects of intra-lingual and inter-lingual space of the Perm Krai. The subject of the research is the language personality implementing the strategy of successful inter-lingual communication in changed multilingual information society.

 

The objectives of the research are concerned with investigation of mechanisms different languages interact and the ways these processes are represented in the human’s mind. Attainment of the aim and objectives of the present research is significant both for the development of the Linguocultural Interaction Theory and its applied aspects.

 

The theoretical grounds will help to form a conception of new types of humanitarian relations in the modern Euro-Asian community.

 

In the practical aspect the research within the trend will allow to study man in the modern information society by the analysis of results and processes of his thinking. The applied aspects of the research will be used both by specialists in inter-lingual and intercultural communication, which is the most wide-spread kind of human interaction, and in educational activity of humanity students, too.

 

The trend which dates back to the middle of the XXth century united the researchers of European languages (Russian, English, German, French, etc.) and the specialists in the Theory of Communication, Text and Translation Studies. Within these sciences the problems of language and human activity on the basis of general isomorphic regularities of language development were being solved. A new concept of the trend is the concept of languages not as static entities but complex dynamic systems reflecting the specificity of speech activity depending on the modern society development. The product of human speech is determined by the man’s ability to satisfy his communication needs (both intra-lingual and inter-lingual). Within the framework of these sciences the problems of creative and dynamic, “living” nature of language, and the necessity to  study language both as a process and a product of human activity (in modern terms – discourse) are studied.

 

The concepts of language dynamics, interrelation of language and thinking formed the basis of the Theory of Language Interaction and Language Planning. Since the 1990s the researchers have primarily been focusing on investigation of the problems of Language Planning, Terminology Science and Professional Communication caused by the change in the Linguistics paradigm that is in transition from Linguistics of Language to Linguistics of Text.  It means that the problems of speech production and reception have been studied. The dominant scientific object is discourse considered as language on-line. The theory has a great applied significance since its main tenets form the strategies of successful professional communication.

 

Especially acute is solving the problems of culture interaction in the modern information society whose basis of development is communication. Within the trend a new linguistic research apparatus has been developed, including new terminology and methodology of analysis based on the anthropocentric and cognitive principles in investigation of modern language interaction problems.

 

The tenets of the research are proved by the investigations of Doctors of Science (L.M. Alexeeva, L.A. Golyakova and S.L. Mishlanova) and presented in more than 400 research papers, including 7 monographs and 20 Study Guides. Within the trend 8 candidate and doctoral dissertations have been done. 20 post-graduate students and graduands are working within the trend.

 

The principal research product is the Theory of Professional Discourse and the new method of its analysis developed in the scientific works of Professors L.M. Alexeeva, L.A. Golyakova and S.L. Mishlanova. The results of the scientific research have been discussed and approved at Russian and international scientific conferences (over last 5 years the scholars have taken part in more than 100 conferences, including presentations at 7 international symposiums abroad), and presented in more than 20 foreign publications. All this supports the idea that the research object and problems developed within the trend cover the research area of Modern International Linguistics, Cognitive Science and Theory of Communication. Within the trend Translation Theory (the scholars published more than 1 100 scientific works, including 9 monographs and 25 study-guides and teachers boos on the scientific problems within the trend) has been developed, as well as the methodology and methods of the poly-paradigmatic analysis of professional discourse as a sphere of professional inter-lingual communication. Within the trend the following scientific periodicals are published: the inter-university collection of papers “Intercultural Communication” and “Acute Problems of Modern Linguistics”, annual abstracting and expertise of Candidate and Doctoral dissertations are made.
