History and Theory of Linguistics

Basic Divisions: Department of General and Slavonic Linguistics.
 
Brief Description of Research Activities
Investigation of fundamental problems of History and Theory of Linguistics. Investigation of History of Linguistics is devoted to study both general issues and revealing new, previously unknown facts (analysis of linguistic works done by non-linguists – Adam Smith, Isaac Newton etc.). Results of the research are published in textbooks and study guides for the course of History and Theory of Linguistics.
 
Investigation of Theory of Linguistics is devoted to the problems of language, specificity of linguistic units, types of language functioning in speech and texts.
 
Functioning and development of language categories are studied in the following aspects: 1) sentence and phrase correlation; 2) semantics and functions of Passive Voice; 3) issues of composite sentences; 4) logical and linguistic aspects of coordination and subordination; 5) questions of Linguistics of Text; 6) problems of the so-called alternative grammar theories; 7) typology and functioning of means of deixis.
