Computer Technologies and Resources in Historical Researches and Education
Basic Divisions: Laboratory of Historical and Political Information Science, Department of Modern Russia History, Faculty of History and Politics, Perm State University
Brief Description of Research Activities
Historical Information Science is aimed at investigation of specificity of IT process in the sphere of Historical Sciences and education. Historical Information Science is based on the system of fundamental and applied knowledge and modern information technologies which are necessary for research and historical education. The trend was founded in the 1960s and is being highly developed in Russia and abroad at the present moment. In 1986 the International Association «History and Computing» was founded, in 1992 the similarly named branch of the association was founded in Russia. Scientific centres in Russia and other countries are carrying out theoretical and practical research within the trend and implementing the appropriate educational programmes. The trend is being actively developed in Germany, Great Britain, Austria, the Netherlands, the USA, Norway and other countries. In Russia the sphere of Historical Information Science is presented by the scholars working at the Faculties of History in Moscow State University, Saint-Petersburg University, Altai State University, Tambov State University, Tomsk State University and others. Historical Information Science at Perm State University has been developing intensely since the first Ural Historical and Political Information Science Laboratory was founded. The Laboratory was established by the order of the Rector of Perm State University on August, 6, 2003, as an interdepartmental educational, scientific and methodological subdivision of the Faculty of History and Politics to develop the perspective interdisciplinary scientific, educational and methodological trend – implementation of new information technologies and methods in historical and political research, and in the educational process. The Laboratory provides development of educational and methodological documentation, planning and realisation of the lecture courses “Computer Science”, “Historical Information Science”, “Computer Technologies in Political Research and Education”, special courses and seminars, efficient educational, methodological and scientific student activity in the sphere of Information and Communication Technology use.
Most of research works are devoted to fundamental and applied issues, as well as Historical Sciences and education IT processes. The questions of digitalisation, storage, documentation, visualisation, historical and cultural heritage artifacts studying based on the development of the full-text historically oriented information systems are of great significance. The projects of designing and development of such systems were supported by the leading Russian scientific foundations.
Along with the research activity and development of information system projects scholars study theoretical and practical problems of computer source study, develop new and adopt previously existing methodologies of historical and political sources, realia and processes research, based on Information and Communication Technology, use network and multimedia technologies to develop new electronic resources and other specialised scientific and educational products.
The research activity resulted in the development of the following historically oriented information systems: “Russian Parliamentarians of the early XXth century” (Russian Foundation for the Humanities, № 03-01-12012 v. supervisor Igor K. Kiryanov); “Magazines of Zemstvo's assemblies as a source of researching the history of local self-management in Russia (second half of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century)” (Russian Foundation for Basic Research, № 04-07-90283 v. supervisor Sergey I. Kornienko); “Perm Provincial Sheets” (Russian Foundation for the Humanities, № 05-01-82102 а/U № 08-01-82101 а/U supervisor Sergey I. Kornienko); “The State Duma Stenographic Reports, 1906-1917” (Russian Foundation for the Humanities, № 08-01-12108 v. supervisor Igor K. Kiryanov).
Since 2009 the optical character recognition programme for handwritten and early printed Cyrillic script books has been developing based on the principles of artificial intelligence technology and parallel computing.
The research work within the programme is realised through the collaboration of the Faculty of History and Politics, Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Internet centre of Perm State University, Perm Regional Local History Museum, A.M. Gorky Perm Regional Library, Perm Art Gallery, the Regional Archives, the Russian State Library and others. Since 2011 the project “Perm Periodicals of the Kolchak period: preservation, documentation and study by information technologies” has been realised jointly with the Perm Regional Local History Museum. The scientific trend development results in solving the problems of preservation of valuable historical and cultural monuments and artifacts by their digitalisation, developing databases and information systems on their basis, providing access to document collections, their exploration with new and more professional instruments.
The trend representatives effectively train specialists in History and Political Sciences, who can develop and use electronic historical and politological resources, use Information and Communication Technology in the educational process and research work.
